Dark wash denim
Dye transfer from denim, especially dark wash or raw denim, happens when excess dye rubs off onto other surfaces or fabrics. This is normal, particularly with new jeans, due to the indigo dye used to achieve the deep blue color. While it can be a nuisance, there are ways to minimize or prevent it.
Machine wash separately inside out, in cold water with similar colors.
Use gentle detergent made for dark fabrics to help preserve color and avoid using fabric softeners.
Air dry to minimize shrinkage and color loss.
Soaking jeans in a solution of cold water and white vinegar can also help set the dye.
